MAC is an initiative of MEPs (members of the European Parliament) against Cancer. This new established informal group of MEPs is committed to promoting action on cancer as an EU priority and harnessing European health policy to that end.

MAC members met with Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou to discuss a new cancer strategy for Europe. 2008 has been a momentous year to get the fight against cancer back on the European Union’s political agenda and MEPs against Cancer have been a driving force. The MAC meeting followed up the Parliament’s Resolution and the Council Conclusions on cancer and intended to hear from Mrs Vassiliou about Commission plans to help member states reduce the burden of cancer. He speaks about his personal experience with cancer, a struggle which inspired him to found MAC. Insisting that the EU can play a central role in the cancer battle, he calls for the establishment of a European Cancer Task Force, one of his key ideas which is also enshrined in the MAC Statement.
