MEPs Against Cancer (MAC) PDF Print E-mail

MAC is an initiative of MEPs (members of the European Parliament) against Cancer. This new established informal group of MEPs is committed to promoting action on cancer as an EU priority and harnessing European health policy to that end.

European Parliament Elections 2009

In the last legislature, 70 MEPs in MAC have been hugely influential in getting cancer back on the EU agenda. We hope we can count on the newly elected MEPs to continue creating awareness about the fight against cancer! Read more

MAC meeting on "Reducing the Burden of Cancer in Europe" (9 Dec 2008)

MAC members met with Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou to discuss a new cancer strategy for Europe. 2008 has been a momentous year to get the fight against cancer back on the European Union’s political agenda and MEPs against Cancer have been a driving force.

The MAC meeting followed up the Parliament’s Resolution and the Council Conclusions on cancer and intended to hear from Mrs Vassiliou about Commission plans to help member states reduce the burden of cancer.

Headline News European Parliament Website (29 Feb 2008)

Slovenian MEP, Alojz Peterle, Co-Chair of MEPs Against Cancer (MAC) and long-standing supporter of ECPC, appears as headline news on the European Parliament website. He speaks about his personal experience with cancer, a struggle which inspired him to found MAC. Insisting that the EU can play a central role in the cancer battle, he calls for the establishment of a European Cancer Task Force, one of his key ideas which is also enshrined in the MAC Statement. As you know ECPC provides the MAC secretariat to keep MEPs informed about health issues that impact on cancer patients and indeed all citizens.

MAC can support cancer patients by

  • Sending a strong political signal that immediate and concerted action is needed to reduce cancer rates and improve cancer outcomes
  • Insisting that the Council Recommendation on Cancer Screening is implemented at national level and good practice guidelines are developed.
  • Promoting publicity and information campaigns around the European Code Against Cancer.
  • Ensuring that best practice is shared across the EU and gaps that exist in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care between and within Member States are eradicated.
  • Harnessing Community policies and instruments such as the Public Health Programmes and the Framework Research Programmes to the successful fight against cancer
  • Promoting cancer research
