The First MAC Conference was held at 22 March 06 in the European Parliament in Brussels. Forty-four Members of the European Parliamente have joined forces to make the fight against cancer a priority in the European Union. At this first conference, attended by Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou and Professor Antonios Trakatellis, vice-President of the European Parliament the MEPs called for the EU urgently to set up a Cancer Task Force to address the looming cancer epidemic.
Call for a Cancer Task Force
The three MAC co-chairs, Adamos Adamou MEP, Liz Lynne MEP and Alojz Peterle MEP, called on Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou to set up a Cancer Task Force involving Health Ministers, MEPs and the Commission, in order to galvanise and coordinate Europe’s fight against cancer.
They are also calling on Health Ministers to support and participate in such a Task Force. Austria, which currently holds the Presidency of the EU, has already indicated its backing. At the MAC conference, Dorjan Marušic, the Slovenian Health Minister, added his support and promised that Slovenia would make cancer a target during its Presidency in the first half of 2008.
